LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team dropped another hard-fought decision Saturday, this time against an NCAA Division I program.
The Golden Eagles captured two of the three doubles contests, but only two of the six singles matches and fell to Colorado State, 5-4, Saturday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (4-6) lost its sixth straight match, all against top competition. Four of the six losses came against NCAA Division II programs ranked in the national top-10 and another came against Colorado State.
This was the second 5-4 loss during the Golden Eagles' recent tough stretch.
Cal State L.A. started well and nearly won all three doubles contests. The Golden Eagles' picked up a point at No. 2 doubles, where
Sonia Landeros and
Tiffany Leung posted an 8-5 win over Mollie Cooper and Kaley Schultz and another at No. 3 doubles, where
Samantha Sismundo and
Sevana Zargarian took an 8-0 decision over Maddie Buxton and Celine Voss. Colorado State took the match at No. 1 doubles when Natalie Heffron and Lauren Pick edged
Leora Hemmerich and
Sydney Postal, 9-7.
Colorado State (3-4) won the matches at the top four singles positions to rally for the win. Cal State L.A. got its wins at No. 5 singles, where Leung beat Kwynn Ecton, 6-0, 6-3 and at No. 6 singles, where
Victoria Vo rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Voss.
Hemmerich fell at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3, to Heffron;
Tiffani Shaik lost at No. 2 singles to Cooper, 6-1, 6-3, Landeros was edged at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 by Lauren Pick and Postal was edged at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 by Buxton.
Cal State L.A. will return to competition against NCAA Division II programs when the Golden Eagles face Academy of Art in San Francisco on Thursday.
