Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team was unable to stop Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles made sure the Coyotes had a battle on their hands.
The Golden Eagles got another big game from
Duce Zaid, but the Coyotes were too much offensively and prevailed, 80-69, Saturday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-11, 12-10 CCAA), which had clinched a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament with its win over UC San Diego on Friday, finishes in fifth place in the conference.
The Golden Eagles will face No. 4 seed Cal State Stanislaus in a first-round tournament game on Thursday at noon at the Citizens Business Bank Arena. Cal State L.A. is making its fifth straight tournament appearance.
Cal State San Bernardino (23-3, 20-2 CCAA) wrapped up the regular-season CCAA championship after an impressive offensive display.
For the second straight night, Zaid was simply too much for the opposition's guards to handle. On Friday, he poured in 26 points against UC San Diego and he equaled his season-high with 30 points against Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. He was 8-of-15 from the floor, including an impressive 4-for-7 effort from 3-point range. As Cal State San Bernardino was often forced to foul after being beaten on his drives to the basket, Zaid was also 10-of-11 from the line.
Quinton Watkins added 19 points for the Golden Eagles and
Solomon Singer had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four points.
Lacy Haddock led a balanced and efficient Cal State San Bernardino attack with 20 points while Kirby Gardner had 19 points. Jordan Burris had 18 points and Christian Cooper had 10 points and six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 41.1 percent for the game (23-of-56), but the Coyotes shot 52.7 percent of their attempts (29-of-55). Cal State San Bernardino was 6-of-16 from 3-point range to 5-of-17 for Cal State L.A. and the Coyotes were 16-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Golden Eagles were 18-of-23.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 36-30 rebounding edge, but also committed 15 turnovers to 12 for the Coyotes.
Cal State San Bernardino won the first meeting of the year by 41 points, 92-51, but it was a much different story on Saturday. The Coyotes had a struggle on their hands in the second meeting.
Cal State San Bernardino shot 58.6 percent in the opening half while building a 46-34 halftime lead, but the Golden Eagles led as late as 26-24 with six minutes left in the half after a pair of free throws by
Aaron Alston.
A three-point play by Burris started a 13-0 run for the Coyotes that gave Cal State San Bernardino the lead for good.
The Coyotes led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but the Golden Eagles kept responding and eventually pulled to within seven points, 76-69, after a layup by Zaid with 2:30 to go. The Golden Eagles had a chance to cut further into the lead with a pair of steals, but couldn't convert either of them into points and eventually had to foul and the Coyotes hit four straight free throws in the final 1:10 to put the game away.
