Golden Eagles Drop Road Game At San Francisco St.

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team continued to struggle on the road and fell to San Francisco State on Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in The Swamp.

The Golden Eagles dropped their sixth consecutive road game with a 63-58 loss to the Gators. Cal State L.A. (12-8, 9-7 CCAA) is now locked in a three-way with San Francisco State and Cal State Stanislaus for fourth place in the conference.

Quinton Watkins had 16 points for the Golden Eagles, while James Tillman had 12 points. Davon Potts added 10 points and Duce Zaid had nine points.

Max Fodor had a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Gators (11-8, 9-7 CCAA). Nefi Perdomo and Will Overton, Jr. had nine points each.

Cal State L.A. shot 42.6 percent for the game (20-of-47) and was an efficient 11-of-21 in the second half. San Francisco State shot 38.9 percent for the game (21-of-54). The Golden Eagles were 5-of-16 from 3-point range, while San Francisco State was just 2-of-18. Cal State L.A. was just 13-of-22 from the free-throw line, while San Francisco State was 19-of-21.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 35-31 and committed 12 turnovers to 11 for the Gators.

Cal State L.A. only led in the early stages of the game and was seemingly battling uphill throughout. A layup by Xavier Jones was the opening basket of the game and a free throw by Zaid gave the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead. San Francisco State opened up a 16-8 lead before a basket by Potts, a steal and dunk by Solomon Singer and a 3-pointer by Potts pulled Cal State L.A. to within one point at 18-17.

San Francisco State opened up a 33-26 lead by halftime.

The Gators then extended their lead to 10 points, 36-26, after a 3-pointer by Perdomo to open the second half, but Cal State L.A. got a quick 3-pointer by Watkins , a basket by Aaron Alston, a basket by Zaid and three-point play by Watkins to close to within three, 39-36.

A tip by Tillman kept the Golden Eagles within five points at 51-46 and a jumper by Potts and a jumper by Tillman closed the gap to 51-50 with 7:32 still to play. Cal State L.A., though, was held without a basket for the next seven minutes and could not recover. A dunk by Tillman made it 59-55 in the final minute and Potts hit a late 3-pointer to make it 61-58. The Gators, though, hit all four of their free throws in the final minute to preserve their lead.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Chico State.
