Golden Eagles Pick Up Big Win Over Warriors

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team found itself on the good side of another cliffhanger Saturday night in the Eagles Nest.

One night after a frustrating loss to Chico State, the Golden Eagles scored the final four points of the game to edge Cal State Stanislaus, 62-59, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (13-9, 10-8 CCAA) pulled itself into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with Cal State Stanislaus (14-8, 10-8 CCAA) and San Francisco State.

Duce Zaid was too much for the Warriors on Saturday, powering his way to a game-high 27 points and six rebounds. He was 7-of-10 from the floor and 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. James Tillman had 17 points and four rebounds and Quinton Watkins had 12 points.

The Golden Eagles and Warriors both had 28 rebounds and Cal State L.A. committed just 13 turnovers to 19 for the Warriors.

The game was tightly-contested throughout and neither team managed a double-digit lead. The Warriors' biggest lead was seven points, while the Golden Eagles' biggest lead was just six points.

The Golden Eagles took a 25-19 lead late in the first half after a 3-pointer by Zaid followed by a three-point play by Zaid, but the Warriors scored the final seven points of the half and took a 26-25 halftime lead after a layup by Marcus.

The Warriors took a 38-31 lead with 14 minutes to play, but the Golden Eagles stayed within striking distance. A 3-pointer by Watkins pulled Cal State L.A. to within 40-38, a layup by Xavier Jones made it 42-40 and a 3-pointer by Watkins made it 44-43 with six minutes to go. After a pair of free throws by Zaid tied it at 45-45 with 5:20 to go, a jumper by Read followed by a 3-pointer by Taylor Bell gave the Warriors a 50-45 edge with 4:30 to play.

The Golden Eagles still trailed by five points after a three-point play by Read, but Watkins knocked down two free throws to make it 53-50 and, after a turnover, a layup by Tillman made it 53-52 with 2:30 to play. Two free throws by Zaid pulled the Golden Eagles to within 55-54 with two minutes to go and Zaid gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half with a dunk on a fastbreak following an assist from Solomon Singer.

That set the stage for a frantic finish.

Read put the Warriors back ahead with a pair of free throws, 57-56, but Zaid countered with a layup to put the Golden Eagles back ahead, 58-57. Read gave the Warriors their last lead after a layup with 40 seconds to play, but two free throws by Zaid gave the Golden Eagles a 60-59 lead with 27 seconds to go. Singer then put the game away when he rebounded a missed 3-pointer and passed quickly to Joshua Munzon, who got the ball to Tillman for a dunk with three seconds to play. A desperation 3-pointer by Marcus under duress didn't fall as the buzzer sounded.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at Humboldt State on Thursday.
