Golden Eagles Beat Chico State In Four Sets

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team used a balanced effort to pick up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Chico State on Friday.

The Golden Eagles overcame a slow start and posted a four-set win over the Wildcats, 16-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-7, 13-6 CCAA) won its third straight match and remain in a third-place tie in the CCAA with Humboldt State. The Golden Eagles also completed a season sweep of Chico State (11-12, 9-10 CCAA).

Iona Lofrano had 17 kills and 12 digs to lead the way, while Loreal Carter also had a strong match with 15 kills. JamieAnn Bero added 12 kills and two blocks.

Lindsay Quigley had 13 kills to lead Chico State, while Shannon Boling had 12 kills.

Chico State captured the first set rather handily and led in the second set, 12-11, before the Golden Eagles finally began to get untracked. A kill by Carter tied the set at 12-12 and kills by Lofrano and Molnar gave the Golden Eagles a 14-12 edge. After the Wildcats made it 14-13, the Golden Eagles scored five straight points to grab control. An attack error started the 5-0 run and a block by Molnar and Bero, two straight service aces by Lofrano and a kill by Bero made it 19-13 and Cal State L.A. never looked back. A kill by Carter ended the set at 25-17 and evened the match.

The Golden Eagles trailed 14-11 in the third set before going on a 6-0 run that turned the match in their favor. A service error and kills by Lofrano and Bero tied it at 14-14. A Lofrano kill, an ace by Colby Joseph and a kill by Lofrano gave the Golden Eagles a 17-14 edge. Chico State stayed within striking distance at 23-21, before a kill by Carter got the Golden Eagles to set point. Chico State saved the first set point, but an attack error gave the third set to Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 21-16 lead in the fourth set following a kill by Kymberly Silveyra, but Chico State closed to within 21-20 before a service error stopped their run. A Carter kill made it 23-20 and, after Chico State closed to within 23-21, kills by Carter and Lofrano ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its home schedule with a match Saturday on "Senior Night" against Cal State Stanislaus. The Golden Eagles will honor their six seniors - Loreal Carter, April Reyes, Molly Lyons, Colby Joseph, Yesenia Ibrahim and Kymberly Silveyra - in pre-match ceremonies beginning at 7 p.m.
