LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team survived a major upset bid by Cal State Stanislaus that threatened to spoil "Senior Night."
The Golden Eagles were unable to close out the match in the fourth set and had to hold off the Warriors, 27-25, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (16-7, 14-6 CCAA) won its fourth straight match and moved into sole possession of third place in the conference with two matches remaining.
Iona Lofrano had 16 kills and 11 digs, while
Loreal Carter had 16 kills and six blocks.
JamieAnn Bero had 12 kills and seven blocks.
Cal State Stanislaus (2-22, 2-18 CCAA) had four players reach double figures in kills. Blair Ehrlich led the way with 15 kills, while Courtney Lewis had 11 kills. Taylor Massengale and Lindey Skadeland had 10 kills each.
Cal State L.A. had a 67-55 edge in kills and a 12.5 - 4 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .220 percentage and limited the Warriors to a .174 clip. Each team had five service aces.
Kelsey Molnar had 44 set assists, while
Colby Joseph had a team-high 18 digs.
The match featured some huge momentum changes, especially in the final two sets.
Cal State L.A. took a tight first set even though Cal State Stanislaus held a set point at 24-23, but a kill by Bero tied it up. A kill by Molnar made it 25-24, but a kill by Skadeland tied it at 25-25. A kill by
Kymberly Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles a 26-25 lead and an attack error gave them the set.
The Warriors evened the match by taking the second set, but the Golden Eagles regrouped and took the third. The set was tied at 18-18 before a kill by Carter and an ace by
Lauren Gomez gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Carter, an attack error, a block by Bero and Carter and a kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and a kill by Lofrano ended the set at 25-20.
Cal State L.A. then looked to have the fourth set firmly in command until the Warriors staged a big rally to force a fifth set. A kill by Carter gave the Golden Eagles an 18-10 lead and a kill by Gomez kept the lead at 21-15 and a kill by Carter made it 22-17. The Warriors, though, turned things around with seven consecutive points and eventually wrapped up the set on a kill by Ehrlich.
The fifth set was a real struggle. Cal State L.A. took a quick 6-1 lead and still had a 7-2 edge after a kill by Lofrano. The Golden Eagles still had an 8-4 edge before the Warriors scored the next seven points to take an 11-8 lead. The Golden Eagles then scored five straight points to regain the lead. An ace by Molnar tied it at 11-11 and two straight kills by Carter gave the Golden Eagles a 13-11 edge. A Lofrano kill got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-12 and the match ultimately ended on a service error.
