Golden Eagles Rally Late To Secure A Sweep

CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball looked like it might be in for a long evening Wednesday in the Torodome before staging a huge third-set rally to complete a three-set sweep.

The Golden Eagles scored 11 straight points to erase a 20-11 third-set deficit and completed a three-set sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State L.A. (14-7, 12-6 CCAA) won for the fourth time in its last five matches.

Kymberly Silveyra had 12 kills to lead a balanced Cal State L.A. attack. Iona Lofrano added 10 kills and Loreal Carter had eight kills for the Golden Eagles.

Dana Brown had eight kills for Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-20, 1-17 CCAA).

The Golden Eagles had a 51-41 advantage in kills and outhit the Toros, .209 to .034. Both teams had eight blocks.

Cal State L.A. benefitted from 27 Cal State Dominguez Hills attack errors, including 11 in the final set.

April Reyes had a match-high 20 digs, while Mia Alcaraz had five kills and five blocks. Kelsey Molnar had 29 set assists, two kills and three blocks.

The Golden Eagles used a big run to break open a tight first set. Kills by Carter and JamieAnn Bero broke an 11-11 tie and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. held a 20-15 lead and then ran off the final five points of the set on an attack error, a kill by Silveyra, an ace by Molnar, a kill by Alcaraz and a kill by Silveyra.

Cal State L.A. opened up leads of 18-12 and 20-14 in the second set and then had to stave off a Cal State Dominguez Hills rally. The Toros closed to within 23-21, before the Golden Eagles got a kill from Alcaraz and a ball-handling error on the Toros to end the set.

Cal State Dominguez Hills then stormed out to a 20-11 lead in the third set and looked in great shape to extend the match. Instead, the Golden Eagles scored 11 straight points to erase the deficit. Kills by Lofrano and Silveyra started the comeback and an attack error and block by Silveyra made it 20-15. Three straight attack errors, a kill by Molnar, two more attack errors and another kill by Molnar gave the Golden Eagles a 22-20 lead. After the Toros tied it at 22-22, the Golden Eagles got kills from Silveyra and Carter and a block by Silveyra and Alcaraz to end the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. with a home match against Chico State
