Golden Eagles Beat Otters To Earn Weekend Split

SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was able to bounce back from a disappointing Friday with a more positive result on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles came up with the big points at the end of the final two sets and beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in The Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (13-7, 11-6 CCAA) won for the third time in its last four games while completing a season sweep of the Otters (8-14, 8-10 CCAA).

Iona Lofrano led the way with a match-high 23 kills and 10 digs, while Kymberly Silveyra had 17 kills and nine digs. JamieAnn Bero had 10 kills.

Jessica Malcolm led Cal State Monterey Bay with 19 kills, while Julia Ashen had 11 kills.

Cal State L.A. had a 65-45 advantage in kills and hit at a .242 percentage to .201 for the Otters. The Golden Eagles were on the short end of a 9-4 count in blocks.

Loreal Carter had seven kills and three blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Kelsey Molnar had 52 set assists and April Reyes had a match-high 26 digs.

All four sets were decided late after close battles throughout. The Golden Eagles and Otters were locked in a 17-17 tie in the opening set before a service error and a kill by Lofrano gave Cal State L.A. the edge for good. A kill by Lofrano and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 24-20 lead and Lofrano ultimately ended the set with a kill.

The Golden Eagles trailed by just a 21-20 score in the second set following a Silveyra kill, but Cal State Monterey Bay won the final four points of the set to even the match.

The Golden Eagles were holding a slim 20-18 lead in the third set before kills by Lofrano and Carter opened up a 22-18 advantage. A kill by Silveyra made it 23-19, an attack error made it 24-19 and a kill by Lofrano ended the set.

Cal State L.A. trailed early in the fourth set, 12-9, but battled back to make it a back-and-forth affair. The set was tied at 22-22 before an attack error and back-to-back kills by Lofrano ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a road match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
