CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game and made it stand up in an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Sigifredo Torres did the scoring honors after a terrific pass from
Halil Tozar and the Golden Eagles edged the Toros, 1-0, in Carson. Cal State L.A. (6-2, 2-1 CCAA) completed a two-game regular-season sweep of the Toros (4-5-1, 2-1 CCAA). The Golden Eagles also posted a 4-1 non-conference win over the Toros in Los Angeles on Sept. 20.
The win also moved the Golden Eagles into a tie for third place in a tightly-packed conference race after three matches.
Torres scored his third goal of the season, while Tozar picked up his seventh assist of the season. The seven assists lead the CCAA.
The only scoring of the game came thanks to Tozar and Torres. The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start and Torres had a pair of chances blocked before making good on his third attempt. Tozar set up the play by dribbling through the Toro defense in the middle of the field and sending a pass to an open Torres, who beat the Toro goalkeeper to the ball and knocked it into an open net.
Cal State Dominguez Hills kept Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Mike Beigarten busy in the opening half and he responded with seven of his nine saves in the game to preserve the lead.
The Toros kept pressing in the second half, but only two of their 17 shots in the second period required Beigarten saves. Cal State L.A.'s defense stood tall in the hard-fought contest, forcing most of the shot attempts to be taken from afar and blocking others.
The nine saves were a season-high for Beigarten. Cal State Dominguez Hills finished the game with a 30-10 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
Torres had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Tozar had two.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino at 11:30 a.m.
