Golden Eagles Fall In Four Sets To Pioneers

HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team was unable to shake its recent struggles on the road.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the first seven points of the match and never fully recovered in a disappointing 25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 27-25 loss to Cal State East Bay on Friday in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. Cal State L.A. (12-7, 10-6 CCAA) lost its third straight match away from the Eagles Nest.

Kymberly Silveyra had a match-high 18 kills for the Golden Eagles, while Iona Lofrano had 14 kills and Loreal Carter added 12 kills.

Both teams had 54 kills in the contest, while Cal State L.A. hit at a .225 percentage to .244 for the Pioneers (8-14, 5-12 CCAA). Cal State East Bay had a 10-6 blocking advantage.

The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 7-0 hole in the opening set and faced an uphill battle the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. closed to within 24-21 after a Silveyra kill before the Pioneers closed out the set.

Cal State L.A. also started slowly in the second set, trailing 4-1 and 6-2. The Golden Eagles battled back to tie it at 11-11 after a Silveyra kill and took a 15-11 lead after a pair of aces by Kelsey Molnar, an attack error and a block by Mia Alcaraz and Silveyra. The Pioneers fought back to tie it at 16-16, but the Golden Eagles got an ace by April Reyes, a kill by Lauren Gomez and three consecutive kills by Carter as part of a 6-0 run that gave them a 22-16 lead and they promptly evened the match.

The Golden Eagles erased a 24-20 deficit in the third set thanks to a kill by Lofrano, an attack error, a Lofrano kill and a block by Molnar and JamieAnn Bero. The Pioneers, though, took advantage of a service error to regain the lead and won the set after a Cal State L.A. attack error.

The Golden Eagles had their chances to extend the match in the fourth set, but fell short. Cal State L.A. opened up a 23-30 lead, only to see the Pioneers score the next three points to tie it. A Lofrano kill gave the Golden Eagles a set point, but Cal State East Bay scored two straight points to get its first match point at 25-24. A kill by Lofrano tied it at 25-25, but the Pioneers scored the next two points to close out the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
