Golden Eagles Complete Season Sweep Of Tritons

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team has to hope now it is on another streak.

The Golden Eagles, after snapping a four-game losing streak with a victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, made it two wins in a row on Saturday with an emphatic four-set triumph over UC San Diego in the Eagles Nest.

After claiming the first two sets, the Golden Eagles wobbled a bit in the third, but left no doubt in the fourth set of a 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. Cal State L.A. (12-6, 10-5 CCAA) completed a season sweep over UC San Diego (12-7, 10-5 CCAA) for the second consecutive year.

The Golden Eagles also pulled into a fourth-place tie with the Tritons, one game behind second-place Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino and two back of Sonoma State.

Iona Lofrano had 22 kills and 20 digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while Kymberly Silveyra had 16 kills, 10 digs and three blocks and Loreal Carter had 15 kills.

Caitlin Brenton had nine kills and three blocks for the Tritons.

Kelsey Molnar 53 set assists, four kills, two aces and two blocks, while April Reyes had a match-high 24 digs.

Cal State L.A. had a commanding 68-40 advantage in kills and outhit the Tritons, .305 - .185. UC San Diego had a 9-5 advantage in blocks and both teams had six service aces.

The Golden Eagles started quickly and never really let UC San Diego get into the match. Even after UC San Diego won the third set to cut the deficit to 2-1, the Golden Eagles rushed out to a 13-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back.

Cal State L.A. took quick control of the opening set and led 21-14 after back-to-back kills from Lofrano. A kill by Silveyra got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-18 and an ace by Molnar ended the frame.

The second set was closer and UC San Diego moved out to a 17-12 lead before the Golden Eagles rallied. A block by Molnar and Mia Alcaraz tied it at 20-20 and a kill by Lofrano broke a 21-21 tie. An attack error, a kill by Carter and an ace by Molnar gave the second set to the Golden Eagles.

UC San Diego opened up a 16-9 lead in the third set and held off a late Cal State L.A. rally to extend the match.

The fourth set, though, was all Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. moved out to a 13-4 lead and kept the Tritons at bay the rest of the way. A kill by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles a 23-15 lead, another kill by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles a match point at 24-17 and a kill by Ally Sassman ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road match at Cal State East Bay next Friday.
