Golden Eagles Stun Seawolves With Late Rally

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team needed some late heroics to keep its California Collegiate Athletic Association record spotless and the Golden Eagles got some.

The Golden Eagles scored the last seven points of the game – the last two coming via clutch free throws by Joshua Munzon – to stun Sonoma State, 59-57, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-1, 6-0 CCAA) extended its best-ever start to a conference season with a thrilling comeback in the final minute.

Trailing by five points with time winding down, Munzon knocked down a 3-pointer in front of the Cal State L.A. bench to make it 57-55 with 40 seconds remaining. After a pair of missed free throws by the Seawolves, Quinton Watkins tied it with a driving layup with 13 seconds remaining.

Munzon then made the play of the game when he made a steal and was fouled with seven seconds to go. He calmly made both ends of a one-and-one to give the Golden Eagles the lead. The Seawolves missed on a desperation 3-pointer just before the buzzer and a late tip-in just missed and Cal State L.A. survived.

The stunning ending spoiled what might have been a starring role for Sonoma State's James Davis, who hit a 3-pointer to erase a three-point Cal State L.A. lead with three minutes to go and put the Seawolves up by five points at 57-52 with another 3-pointer with 1:19 to play.

Munzon spoiled all of that with his final-minute heroics.

Watkins led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, while Munzon, Duce Zaid and Davon Potts all scored nine points each.

Sterling Arterberry had 15 points to lead four Sonoma State players in double figures. Mike Harris had 13 points and five rebounds, Davis finished with 12 points and Justin Herold had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot 41.3 percent for the game (19-of-46), while Sonoma State (1-9, 0-6 CCAA) shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45). The Golden Eagles were just 7-of-21 from 3-point range, while Sonoma State was a more efficient 7-of-12.

The Golden Eagles did a better job at the free-throw line, making 14-of-19, while Sonoma State was just 10-of-21.

The rebounding battle was even at 30-30, while Sonoma State committed 16 turnovers to 14 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. trailed by five points early, 10-5, but recovered and took a seven-point lead, 23-16, with five minutes to go in the half. A free throw by James Tillman made it 26-19 and the Golden Eagles eventually settled for a 26-22 halftime lead.

Watkins scored five quick points to open the second half and a pair of free throws by Zaid gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 37-25, with 16:50 remaining.

Sonoma State, though, steadily chipped away at the deficit and narrowed the gap to 50-48 after a 3-pointer by Arterberry with five minutes to go and to a single point at 50-49 following a free throw by Davis with 3:50 to play.

A Watkins layup got the lead back to 52-49, but Davis took care of that with a 3-pointer. Herold gave the Seawolves their first lead of the half with a dunk following a steal by Jason Walter and Davis' 3-pointer seemed to put the Golden Eagles on the brink with 1:19 to go.

That ultimately just set up the five straight points by Munzon and Watkins and some excellent pressure defense with the clock winding down that ended with Munzon making a steal, getting tripped and making the game-winning free throws.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a conference game at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday.
