Golden Eagles Fall Flat In Loss To Wildcats

Box Score CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team started the weekend in a tie for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and ended it with a pair of disappointing losses.

The Golden Eagles saw the weekend go from bad to worse with a 75-46 loss to Chico State Saturday night in Acker Gym. Cal State L.A. (9-3, 6-2 CCAA) shot only 22 percent for the game and failed to score 50 points for the second straight game. The Wildcats (10-2, 6-2 CCAA) shot 46.6 percent and forced 20 Cal State L.A. turnovers that they converted into 26 points.

The Golden Eagles trailed at halftime, 33-22, and then were outscored 42-24 in the second half and faced deficits as large as 33 points.

James Tillman had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Quinton Watkins had 11 points. Joshua Munzon had nine points and three rebounds, while Aaron Alston had a team-high seven rebounds.

Rashad Parker, Sean Park and Jordan Semple had 14 points each for the Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles made just 13 baskets in 59 attempts, while Chico State was 27-of-58. Cal State L.A. was just 2-of-6 from 3-point range, while Chico State was 6-of-16. The Golden Eagles were 18-of-25 from the free-throw line and the Wildcats were 15-of-23.

Cal State L.A. led only twice, on a basket by Munzon that opened the scoring and on a basket by Watkins that made it 4-3. A pair of free throws by Munzon and a 3-pointer by Watkins sliced an 11-point deficit to 22-16, but Chico State went on its second 7-0 run of the half to take a 29-16 lead.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 11 points at halftime and closed to within 10 points twice early in the second half. A free throw by Watkins made it 33-23 and a basket by Tillman made it 36-26 with 17:27 to go. Chico State, though, scored the next 10 points and led comfortably the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona next Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
