Golden Eagles Suffer First Conference Defeat

Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team saw the best conference start in the program's history come to an end Friday night.

The Golden Eagles lost their first California Collegiate Athletic Association contest with a disappointing 66-49 loss to Cal State Stanislaus in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (9-2, 6-1 CCAA) had dodged a defeat last Saturday with a last-minute rally past Sonoma State in the Eagles Nest, but there was no escape on Friday against the Warriors.

Cal State L.A. fell behind by 12 points at halftime, 34-22, and never could muster a comeback in the second half.

Quinton Watkins had 21 points for the Golden Eagles, while James Tillman added 17 points. The duo combined for 38 of the team's 49 points.

Marcus Bell led Cal State Stanislaus (8-3, 4-3 CCAA) with a game-high 22 points and 18 rebounds. Chris Read added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Golden Eagles shot just 37 percent from the floor (20-of-54) and made only three of 11 of their 3-point tries. Cal State Stanislaus shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) and was 6-of-16 from behind the 3-point arc.

Cal State L.A. was out-rebounded, 42-26. The Golden Eagles committed 10 turnovers and forced 15. The Golden Eagles were just 6-of-12 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 10-of-13.

The Golden Eagles led early, 14-10, after a basket by David Hall, but were outscored, 24-8, over the last 12:36 of the half.

Things went from bad to worse in the second half. The Golden Eagles scored the first four points of the half on baskets by Tillman and Joshua Munzon to pull to within 34-26, but the Warriors responded by scoring the next nine points to take a 43-26 lead and Cal State L.A. trailed by double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State.
