Golden Eagles Rally From Early Deficit To Win, 2-1

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team fell behind early, but back impressively for an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the 32nd minute, but tied the score by halftime and scored early in the second half of a 2-1 win over the Coyotes at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (6-1-1, 4-1-1 CCAA) became the first team this season to score two goals in a game against the stingy Cal State San Bernardino defense.

The Coyotes (4-4-2, 2-4 CCAA) had allowed only three goals all season heading into Sunday and two of those came via penalty kick.

Cal State L.A. had a 19-11 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. The game-winning goal scored by Dane Nielsen came off a corner kick.

Even though the Golden Eagles had an advantage in possession early in the game, it was the Coyotes who got on the board first. A miscommunication in the Cal State L.A. defense led to Andre Spencer making a pass to an open Omar Laris, who kicked the ball into an empty net from an angle.

Cal State L.A. had a solid effort to tie the game in the 41st minute after Jordan Payne stole the ball, but his lofted shot over Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Roberto Gonzalez floated just over the crossbar.

The Golden Eagles kept pressuring and finally got the equalizer in the final minute of the half. Halil Tozar recorded his third goal of the season with assists from Payne and Troy Dumlao. Payne did an excellent job to gain possession deep in Cal State San Bernardino territory and send a cross into the box. Tozar eventually wound up with the ball and drilled a shot from point-blank range in traffic into the goal.

Dumlao was especially effective in the opening minutes of the second half as Cal State L.A. made its push to take the lead. He had a strong blast that was tipped just over the crossbar in the 54th minute and he had another drive toward the near post saved by a diving Gonzalez.

The Golden Eagles finally broke through for the game-winner in the 57th minute. After securing a corner kick, Tozar sent a dangerous ball into the box where Nielsen leaped high to head into the net as the Cal State San Bernardino defense tried unsuccessfully to keep it out.

Mike Beigarten made three saves for the Golden Eagles, including a diving stop in the 75th minute on a bid by Roberto Mariscal.

Cal State L.A.'s defense, which has allowed only four goals all season, took it from there and secured the Golden Eagles' second straight win.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Sonoma State.
