Golden Eagles Drop Series Finale To Sonoma State

Box Score ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw a once-promising California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Sonoma State end in frustrating fashion Sunday.

After winning the series opener on Friday to stretch their winning streak to 10 games, the Golden Eagles dropped the last three games of the series, including a 3-1 decision in the finale on Sunday. Cal State L.A. (26-16, 23-9 CCAA), which was ranked 12th in the nation heading into the series, slipped two games behind first-place Chico State and are now just one game ahead of third-place Cal State Monterey Bay.

The offense, which has been the most prolific in the conference for most of the season, was the culprit on Sunday. A solo home run by James Wharton, his 10th of the season, in the first inning was the only run Cal State L.A. managed on Sunday. After winning the series opener, 6-4, the Golden Eagles managed only four runs in the remaining three games and only one run in the final two.

Sonoma State (27-15, 19-13 CCAA) maintained its hold on fourth place in the conference. The Seawolves got another strong start from its pitching staff, this time from George Asmus, who scattered five hits and a pair of walks through 6 1/3 innings. Steven Zaharias worked the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed only two hits and a walk to earn the save.

Cal State L.A. got good pitching as well on Sunday. Omar Jimenez blanked the Seawolves through four innings before surrendering a two-run, two-out double to Devon Zenn. Jimenez allowed six hits and two runs in five innings while walking three and striking out two. Jordan Cavazos allowed two hits and one run in one inning, while Ryan Cooperstone pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Wharton put the Golden Eagles ahead in the first when he hit the first pitch he saw from Asmus over the centerfield wall for his 10th home run of the season. Wharton had three hits in the game, including the home run and a double. Cooperstone had two hits, while Cody Doyle and Manny Acosta each had one hit.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
