Golden Eagles End Season On A Flurry Of Missed Shots

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team saw its 2012-13 season come to a disappointing end Tuesday night under a flurry of missed shots.

The Golden Eagles' defensive effort was stout once again, but Cal State L.A. shot just 28.6 percent from the floor and lost to San Francisco State, 57-47, in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (16-11) had the nation's No. 2 defense, but never could get its offense going against an aggressive San Francisco State defensive effort.

The Golden Eagles limited San Francisco State (16-11) to just 37.5 percent shooting, but still could not come up the win.

San Francisco State was 7-of-20 from 3-point range, while Cal State L.A. made just one of 18 attempts from behind the arc.

James Tillman had an efficient game for the Golden Eagles, scoring a team-high 16 points, but he was the only Golden Eagle to reach double figures. Quinton Watkins had eight points and six rebounds, while Joshua Munzon had seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

Winston Demmin had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Gators, while James Albright had 12 points and seven rebounds and Brandon Tatum had 10 points and six rebounds.

Cal State L.A. made just 16-of-56 shot attempts (28.6 percent), while San Francisco State was 18-of-48 (37.5 percent). The Golden Eagles entered the contest with the No. 2 scoring defense in the nation (allowing just 57 points per contest) and led the nation with field-goal percentage defense.

Cal State L.A. had a 40-35 rebounding edge and committed 12 turnovers to 11 for the Gators. Cal State L.A. was 14-of-20 from the free-throw line, while San Francisco State was 14-of-19.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early, but stayed within striking distance until the final few minutes. Cal State L.A., though, never could quite get over the hump after trailing by as many as nine points in the first half.

A basket by Tillman gave the Golden Eagles an 8-7 lead, but a 3-pointer by Albright started a 7-0 run and the Gators never trailed again.

Tillman got hot late in the half and helped the Golden Eagles slice the deficit to 22-18 by halftime.

A 3-pointer by Munzon gave the Golden Eagles a 23-22 lead with 18:23 to play, but that was the last time Cal State L.A. would lead. A three-point play by Tatum gave the Gators a 25-23 lead and they would never trail again. A free throw by Tillman brought the Golden Eagles to within a point, but San Francisco State kept the Golden Eagles at arm's length throughout the remainder of the game.

Cal State L.A. still trailed by just seven points, 47-40, after a pair of free throws  by Willie Trimble with 3:58 remaining, but the Gators scored the next five points and went on to the victory.

Jordan Richard had six points, a team-high 11 rebounds and six more blocks. Richard leads the nation in blocked shots and has set a new CCAA single-season record with 123 blocks, eclipsing the old record of 106 set by Horacio Llamas of Grand Canyon in 1995-96.

Trimble finished with six points and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
