Golden Eagles Drop Both Ends Of Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a long and largely unproductive day Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles managed only two runs in the two games and dropped both games to the Tritons, 10-2 and 4-0, at Triton Field. Cal State L.A. (16-11, 14-6 CCAA) lost three of the four games in the series to UC San Diego (15-12, 10-10 CCAA) as the Golden Eagles reached the halfway point of their conference schedule.

Ryan Cooperstone had two hits in each game, but the Golden Eagles had just six hits in the opener and only three hits in the nightcap. Cody Doyle had a solo home run in the opener.

Cal State L.A. had a rough start in Saturday's doubleheader. The Golden Eagles gave up 12 walks, hit four batters and committed four errors in the first game. Brandon Quintero had a solid start in the nightcap, going six strong innings and allowing seven hits and just two earned runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven.

The Golden Eagles pulled into a 1-1 tie in the second inning of the opener. Tyler Christian was hit by a pitch, Cooperstone singled and Manny Acosta sacrificed the runners over. Niko Garcia then drove in the tying run on a groundout.

UC San Diego, though, scored twice in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-1 lead. Doyle hit a solo home run to make it 7-2 in the sixth, but the Golden Eagles were blanked the rest of the way.

The Tritons took a quick 2-0 lead in the nightcap with a pair of unearned runs in the first. The Tritons added solo runs in the third and fifth innings.

Troy Cruz went five shutout innings for the Tritons, while Scott Zeman, Richard Kilbury and Dan Koledin combined to blank the Golden Eagles over the final two innings.

Cooperstone had two of the Golden Eagles' three hits. Jordan Castro had a pinch-hit double in the sixth for Cal State L.A.'s other hit.

Cal State L.A. will take a break from CCAA play next week and open a two-day, three-game series against Fresno Pacific on Friday at Reeder Field at 6 p.m.
