Golden Eagles Have Winning Streak Snapped By Wildcats

Box Score CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Saturday night due in large part to an early 3-point barrage from the Chico State Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by eight points at halftime and couldn't quite catch the Wildcats in the second half of a 70-60 loss in Acker Gym. Cal State L.A. (15-9, 12-8 CCAA) slipped into a fourth-place tie with Chico State (15-9, 12-8 CCAA) with two regular-season games remaining. The top four teams will host first-round California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament games on Tuesday, March 5.

Cal State L.A. entered the week with the No. 2 scoring defense and was No. 1 in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, but Chico State came out blazing and hit eight of its 15 attempts from 3-point range while racing to a 42-34 halftime lead. The Wildcats then scored the first five points of the second half to take a 47-34 lead. After a quick Cal State L.A. timeout, the defense finally forced some stops to allow the Golden Eagles to climb back into the contest, but they never could grab the lead.

Cal State L.A. shot 39 percent for the game (23-of-59) and was 4-of-14 from 3-point range (28.6 percent). The Wildcats cooled off after their hot start and hit 38.6 percent for the game (22-of-57). The Wildcats also hit just one 3-pointer in the second half and wound up 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) for the game. Fouls were an issue for the Golden Eagles as Cal State L.A. committed 18 fouls to just nine for the Wildcats. Chico State was 17-of-24 from the free-throw line, while Cal State L.A. was 10-of-12.

Julian Camper had a tremendous game for the Golden Eagles, scoring a season-high 22 points to go along with four rebounds. James Tillman had 10 points, while Jordan Richard had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks despite playing in foul trouble for most of the night. Camper, Richard and Joshua Munzon all finished the team with four fouls. Willie Trimble finished with eight points, while Munzon had seven points.

Damario Sims and Amir Carraway led the Wildcats with 13 points each, while James Staniland had 11 points.

Cal State L.A. had a 37-35 rebounding edge, but committed 15 turnovers to nine for the Wildcats.

Tillman scored the opening basket of the game, but Chico State opened up a quick 14-6 lead before baskets by Quinton Watkins and Richard sliced the deficit to 14-10. Camper got the Golden Eagles to within 17-14, but Chico State built leads as large as eight points in the opening half while taking a 42-34 halftime lead.

The Wildcats then scored the first five points of the second half to take a 47-34 lead before the Golden Eagles finally made a charge to get back into the game. Munzon made a steal and layup to start a 10-0 run. Tillman hit two free throws and then a basket, Richard threw down a dunk after an offensive rebound and Camper scored inside to make it 47-44 with 16 minutes remaining. Another basket by Camper made it 49-46 with 15 minutes still to go, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Cal State L.A. managed only a Richard dunk over the next seven minutes and trailed, 57-48, before a basket by Trimble made it 57-50. A pair of Munzon free throws made it 59-52 and a 3-pointer by Munzon made it 59-55 with 5:51 still to play. Chico State, though, scored the next eight points to put the game away.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona.
