Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team turned in another outstanding defensive effort and recorded a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory.
The Golden Eagles, with the No. 2 defense in the nation, limited Cal State Stanislaus to just 50 points and recorded a 56-50 victory in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (15-8, 12-7 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and remained in a tie for third place in the conference with San Francisco State. The Golden Eagles also officially clinched a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The top four teams will host first-round games on Tuesday, March 5.
Julian Camper had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Jordan Richard had 10 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks.
Joshua Munzon had nine points, including four key free throws down the stretch.
Nick Hodge had 12 points for Cal State Stanislaus (9-14, 6-13 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. shot 40 percent for the game (18-of-45) and was an efficient 58.3 percent in the second half (7-of-12). The Golden Eagles held Cal State Stanislaus to just 33.9 percent shooting (21-of-62) and just 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from behind the 3-point arc. Cal State L.A. had a 46-34 rebounding edge and also made 18-of-25 from the free-throw line. Cal State Stanislaus was just 5-of-13 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the game, but never by double-digit margins. Cal State L.A. was 8-of-12 from the free-throw line over the final two minutes to put the game away.
The Golden Eagles started well and opened up a quick 12-6 lead following a basket by
Quinton Watkins. After the Warriors grabbed a 14-13 lead,
Solomon Singer knocked down a go-ahead 3-pointer. The game was tied at 25-25 late in the first half before a 3-pointer by
Willie Trimble with four seconds remaining in the half to give the Golden Eagles a 28-25 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles started the second half quickly as well and opened up a 38-30 after a layup by Watkins. Cal State Stanislaus closed to within three points, but two free throws by Camper and four straight free throws by Munzon gave the Golden Eagles a 48-39 lead with 3:47 to go. The Warriors got as close as five points at 48-43, but the defense stood tall and one free throw by Watkins and two by Singer extended the lead to 51-43 with 1:10 left. The Warriors hit a 3-pointer to close to within 51-46, but two free throws by Trimble with 55 seconds remaining and two more by Singer with 31 seconds left pushed the lead back to seven points.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State.
