Golden Eagles Unable To Win Another Extra-Inning Game

Box Score POMONA -- After an exhiliharting 15-inning win to start the day, Cal State L.A.'s baseball team endured the other end of an extra-inning loss Friday in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.

The Golden Eagles won the completion of Thursday's opener, 9-5, early Friday, but fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 8-7, in 10 innings in the regularly-scheduled game. The Broncos rallied from a five-run deficit with five runs in the eighth and then won it in the 10th on a bases-loaded walk. Cal State L.A. (7-6, 5-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in conference play.

James Wharton, who picked up the win on the mound in the opener, returned  to first base in the regularly-scheduled game and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Tyler Christian was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, Niko Garcia was 2-for-2 with three walks and two RBI, Ryan Cooperstone had two RBI and Jeremy Weber had a pair of hits.

Omar Jimenez had a solid start on the mound for the Golden Eagles. He went six innings and didn't allow an earned run. He gave up seven hits and one walk and struck out four.

The Golden Eagles scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Garcia walked, Weber doubled and Casey Ryan drove in Garcia with a groundout. A two-run single by Cooperstone in the sixth inning made it 3-0, but Cal Poly Pomona got two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.

Cal State L.A. then struck for four runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead. Wharton and Cody Doyle led the inning off with singles and Christian had a go-ahead RBI double. After Cooperstone was hit by a pitch, Manny Acosta made it 5-2 with a fielder's choice. Garcia then doubled in a pair of runs to give the Golden Eagles their 7-2 advantage.

That lasted until the eighth inning when Cal Poly Pomona countered with five runs to tie it up. The Broncos (10-3, 3-3 CCAA) bunched together six hits and a walk and recorded three consecutive two-out RBI singles to pull even.

The Golden Eagles were unable to score in the ninth and 10th innings and the Broncos got the game-winner in the 10th. The rally started with an error and the Broncos added a single and then loaded the bases with an intentional walk. The winning run was then forced in on a walk.

Cal State L.A. will complete the four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday with a doubleheader at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
