Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to complete a weekend sweep in its final homestand of the season.
The Golden Eagles were stymied all night by Sonoma State's aggressive defense and fell to the Seawolves, 61-41, Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-10, 10-8 CCAA) lost for the fifth time in six games and slid into fifth place in the conference.
Sonoma State (8-14, 6-12 CCAA) completed a road weekend sweep and pulled itself back into the chase for a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The top eight teams advance and Sonoma State is now just two games out of a spot.
Tessondra Williams had 12 points for the Golden Eagles, but she was the only player to reach double figures. Cal State L.A. shot just 27.6 percent for the game (16-of-58) and was just 3-of-19 from 3-point range (15.8 percent). The Golden Eagles even struggled from the free-throw line, making just half of their 12 attempts.
Sonoma State, meanwhile, was much more efficient, making 41.5 percent of its shots and shooting a red-shot 58.8 percent from 3-point range (10-of-17). Brianna Burgos led the way with 19 points and made 5-of-6 shots from behind the arc.
The Seawolves also dominated the boards, owning a 51-30 advantage in that department. Cal State L.A. forced 23 Sonoma State turnovers and committed just 13.
The Seawolves grabbed a quick 5-0 lead on the basis of a basket by Hannah Sourek and a 3-pointer by Alysa Ito and never trailed. The Seawolves took a 23-7 lead after a basket by Taylor Vigil and took a 15-point halftime lead, 32-17, after a three-point play by Sourek with two seconds remaining in the period.
Cal State L.A. tried to rally, but never could get the lead down to single digits. A jumper by Alisa Belt made it 34-23 with 17:50 to go and a layup by
Kaija Powell made it 37-25 with 14:18 to go. The closest Cal State L.A. could get was 10 points, 39-29, after a basket by
Alyssa Hanson with 11:42 remaining, but Sonoma State hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the outcome was never in doubt again.
