Tillman Leads Golden Eagles To Win Over East Bay

Box Score HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team earned another California Collegiate Athletic Association road win Saturday night and James Tillman was a major reason why.

Tillman poured in a career-high 35 points to lead the Golden Eagles to a 78-74 win over Cal State East Bay Saturday night in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (5-1, 3-0 CCAA) posted a win on Friday night after a 30-point outburst from Quinton Watkins.

Watkins added 17 points in the win on Saturday. Tillman and Watkins combined for 52 points in the win on Saturday and combined for 51 points in an 81-73 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.

The Golden Eagles had two other players reach double figures because Aaron Alston and Davon Potts had 10 points each.

Gabe Kindred had 22 points to lead Cal State East Bay (3-4, 1-1 CCAA), while Donavon Jackson had 16 points, Nick Grieves had 12 points and Mark Samuels had 11 points.

Cal State L.A. shot 44.6 percent from the field (29-of-65) and made 52.6 percent of its shots in the second half (18-of-34). Cal State East Bay shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56), but had a big edge from 3-point range, hitting 8-of-24 while Cal State L.A. made just 1-of-9. The Golden Eagles hit 19-of-29 free-throw tries, while the Pioneers were 22-of-23.

The Golden Eagles had a 42-34 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 21 for the Pioneers.

The game was played with single-digit leads throughout. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as seven points in the first half and led by as many as seven points in the second half.

Cal State East Bay grabbed a 23-16 lead in the first half, but the Golden Eagles responded by scoring 10 straight points to erase the deficit. Watkins hit a 3-pointer to start the run, Tillman hit a free throw, Watkins scored on a layup, Tillman gave the Golden Eagles the lead and Potts scored to make it 26-23. That was part of a 17-4 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 33-27 lead. Cal State L.A. settled for a 33-31 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles trailed for a final time at 41-39, but scored seven straight points on a dunk by Alston, a layup from Tillman, a dunk by Tillman with an assist from Joshua Munzon and a free throw by Tillman. The Pioneers stayed within striking distance and ultimately tied it at 66-66 on a pair of free throws by Ryan Hebebrand with 3:20 to go.

Potts gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a jumper with 2:54 to go and a layup by Watkins made it 70-66 with 1:36 remaining.

Potts hit two free throws to make it 75-68 in the waning seconds. The Pioneers closed to within 76-74 with seven seconds left, but a pair of Tillman free throws put the game out of reach.

Solomon Singer contributed four points, six rebounds and two assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 17 with a home game against Pacifica College at 1 p.m.
