Box Score CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team heads into the holidays with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory to look back on.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a big 48-30 halftime lead and went on to an impressive 74-67 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (7-1, 4-0 CCAA) got huge contributions from guards
Joshua Munzon,
Duce Zaid and
Davon Potts while completing its first season sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills since the 2007-08 season.
Munzon had a career-high 24 points to lead the way and also recorded eight assists and three steals. Zaid had 12 points and five assists and had three quick 3-pointers that helped stake the Golden Eagles to an early lead. Potts had 10 points, including three 3-pointers. Munzon, Zaid and Potts combined for all nine 3-pointers that Cal State L.A. made on Sunday.
Givon Crump had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Toros, while Pierson Williams had 18 points.
The Golden Eagles got contributions from a lot of sources on Sunday and combined to shoot 50 percent (29-of-58) for the game while holding the Toros to just 37.5 percent shooting (21-of-56). Cal State L.A. was especially good in the first half, making 19-of-33 field-goal attempts (57.1 percent), including 8-of-12 from 3-point range.
Aaron Alston had eight points and five rebounds, while
James Tillman had seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
Cal State L.A. was out-rebounded, 39-35, but also forced 16 turnovers while committing 12. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-13 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 15-of-21.
The Golden Eagles trailed only once, 3-2, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Zaid took care of that. Zaid hit another 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 15-7. After Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a run to tie it at 18-18, a 3-pointer by Potts started an 11-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Adarryl Thomas followed Potts' 3-pointer with back-to-baskets, Alston hit a jumper and Munzon scored on a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 29-18 edge.
A 3-pointer by Munzon stretched the lead to 32-19 and the Golden Eagles closed the half by scoring the final five points on a basket by
David Hall and another 3-pointer by Munzon to take a 48-30 lead at the break.

Jordan Mitchell basket kept the lead at 50-32 early in the second half. The lead stayed in double digits until the Toros trimmed the deficit to 61-52. The Golden Eagles responded nicely with a 3-pointer by Potts and a dunk by Alston to push the lead back to 14 at 66-52 with 3:51 to go.
After the Toros sliced the deficit to nine points once again, Munzon got a steal and hit two free throws to put the game out of reach. Free throws by Hall and Potts kept the lead at 74-64 before a 3-pointer by the Toros in the waning seconds accounted for the final points of the game.
Cal State L.A. will now be off until resuming CCAA play with a home game on Friday, Jan. 3, against San Francisco State at 7:30 p.m.
