Box Score SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team had its chances, but ultimately fell in five sets to Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles had a 2-1 lead in sets, but the Otters rallied for a 25-16, 17-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12 in the Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (14-11, 9-8 CCAA lost its fourth straight match, while Cal State Monterey Bay (16-9, 10-7 CCAA) beat the Golden Eagles in five sets for the second time this season.
Kymberly Silveyra had 17 kills, 20 digs and four service aces, while
Iona Lofrano had 13 kills and 13 digs.
Bethanee Boggs had nine kills, 12 digs and four blocks and
JamieAnn Bero had nine kills and four blocks.
Jessica Malcolm had a match-high 24 kills for the Otters, while Julia Ashen had 22 kills and 16 digs.
Shea Hamilton had 46 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Colby Joseph had 17 digs.
Cal State Monterey Bay had a 61-57 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .243-.213. Both teams had 11 blocks. The Golden Eagles had 11 aces and nine service errors, while the Otters had seven aces and 10 errors.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and fell behind early, 12-5, in the opening set and never recovered. Cal State L.A., though, rebounded quickly in the second set to even the match. The teams were tied at 14-14 before a Silveyra kill, an attack error, three straight aces by Silveyra and a kill by Bero gave the Golden Eagles a 20-14 lead. An ace by Hamilton got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-17 and a kill by Bero evened the match.
The Golden Eagles then came up big late in the third set to take the lead. Back-to-back kills by Silveyra and a kill by
Loreal Carter broke a 19-19 tie and gave the Golden Eagles a 22-19 lead. Kills by Carter, Silveyra and Lofrano ended the set.
Cal State L.A. then built a quick 7-2 lead in the fourth set following a kill by Silveyra only to see the Otters score the next six points to erase the deficit. After falling behind, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Boggs to pull to within 19-17, but that was as close as they would get and Cal State Monterey Bay evened the match.
The fifth set was tight throughout. Cal State Monterey Bay took a quick 7-4 lead, but the Golden Eagles tied it at 9-9 after a kill by Carter and grabbed an 11-10 lead after Bero kill and an attack error. A Carter kill tied the set at 12-12, but the Otters won the final three points to take the match.
Cal State L.A. will play three home matches next week beginning with a contest on Wednesday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. That match will be followed by Midnight Madness.
