Golden Eagles Get Overtime Winner Against Humboldt

Box Score ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team needed a late rally Sunday after allowing two goals in a game for the first time this season and the Golden Eagles got it.

Andre Bissmark tied the game in the 80th minute and Halil Tozar got the game-winner in overtime to lift the Golden Eagles past Humboldt State, 3-2, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at College Creek Field. Cal State L.A. (7-1-2, 5-1-2 CCAA) needed the victory to remain in third place in the tight CCAA South Division standings. The Golden Eagles stayed two points behind first-place UC San Diego and one point behind second-place Chico State.

Cal State L.A. wound up with an 18-17 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Mike Beigarten wound up with five saves for the Golden Eagles, while Ryan Addes made seven saves for Humboldt State (4-5-1, 2-5-1 CCAA).

The Golden Eagles had entered Sunday's game with only four goals allowed in their first nine games, but Humboldt State scored twice in a 14-minute span of the second half to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Cal State L.A. opened the scoring late in the first half when Eduardo Almarez picked up his first goal of the season with an assist from Jordan Payne. Almarez received a pass in the center of the box and drilled a shot into the net in the 44th minute.

The Golden Eagles held that advantage until Humboldt State struck for the equalizer in the 61st minute. Braxton Griffen did the scoring honors with an assist from Zach Hammond.

Hammond then gave the Lumberjacks the lead in the 75th minute when he curled a free kick around the wall and into the net.

The Golden Eagles picked up their pressure after falling behind and their efforts were rewarded in the 80th minute when Bissmark took a nice pass from Tozar and put a shot past Addes.

The Lumberjacks had the first shots of the overtime period, but Cal State L.A. began generating some chances in the 96th minute and got the game-winner in the 97th minute. Troy Dumlao set up the winning goal by feeding a pass to Tozar, who worked his way free from pressure and rifled a shot inside the far post to end it.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay at 4:30 p.m.
