Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got another strong defensive effort Saturday night and rode it to a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles had an overwhelming 40-20 rebounding edge and came up with some big plays down the stretch to beat Cal State Stanislaus, 64-58, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-5, 6-4 CCAA) completed its first weekend sweep of CCAA games this season.
The Golden Eagles, who were coming off a 54-53 win over Chico State on Friday, had four players score in double figures on Saturday.
James Tillman had 19 points to lead the way, while
Joshua Munzon had 15 points and nine rebounds and also added a game-clinching steal in the waning seconds.
Solomon Singer had 10 points and five rebounds, while
Willie Trimble had 10 points.
Nick Hodge had 16 points and six rebounds for the Warriors (6-8, 3-7 CCAA), who also got 11 points from Marcus Walters and 10 points from Ray Mitchell.
Julian Camper had six points and seven big rebounds for Cal State L.A.
Cal State L.A. shot 45.8 percent for the game (22-of-48), while Cal State Stanislaus converted on 47.2 percent of its shots (25-of-53). The Golden Eagles had the decisive rebounding edge as well as a 36-20 advantage in the paint and a 22-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Cal State L.A. made 18-of-24 free throws, while Cal State Stanislaus was just 2-of-8. The Golden Eagles made all six free throws in the final minute – four by Munzon and two by Trimble – to hold off the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles started slowly once again, but not nearly as slowly as the 13-0 hole they found themselves on Friday against Chico State. Cal State L.A. took its first lead of the game at 12-10 and eventually built a seven-point lead, 30-23, after a jumper by
Marc Wilson before settling for a 33-28 halftime lead.
Cal State Stanislaus scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 35-33 lead and took its biggest lead of the period at 46-42 following a 3-pointer by Clinton Tremelling with 9:40 to go.
Cal State L.A., though, responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. Munzon started the run with a layup and Trimble tied it at 46-46 after a steal and layup. Munzon then hit a clutch 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good and Tillman and Trimble followed with layups to make it 53-46 with 6:40 remaining.
Cal State L.A. built the lead to eight points, 57-49, after a jumper by Trimble with 4:30 remaining. Cal State Stanislaus fought back to within three points, 58-55 with 1:30 remaining after a basket by Hodge, but Munzon responded with two free throws to make it 60-55. Ray Mitchell knocked down a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to go to make it 60-58, but Trimble hit two free throws to bump the lead back to four points. Munzon then stole the inbounds pass after a Cal State L.A. timeout and hit two free throws to finish the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Humboldt State.
