Golden Eagles Beat Seawolves For Third Straight CCAA Win

Box Score ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team came up big down the stretch to pull out an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory at Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles got clutch 3-pointers from Kelli Lewis and Paige Melville to extend a slim lead and then hit six free throws in the final 25 seconds to secure a 64-56 victory in the Wolves' Den. Cal State L.A. (10-4, 5-2 CCAA) won its third straight game and closed to within one game of first-place Chico State.

Melville led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, while Tessondra Williams had 14 points, including four late free throws to put the game out of reach. Lewis added 11 points, while Richelle Najera had four consecutive points to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good and also contributed a team-high eight rebounds.

Sonoma State (4-7, 2-5 CCAA) got 14 points from Jamie Capoot, while Bronte Sheahan had nine points and Elizabeth Day had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot just 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the floor, but held Sonoma State to just 35.8 percent shooting (19-of-53). The Golden Eagles knocked down eight 3-pointers, getting three each from Melville and Lewis and two from Lacey Gibbons. Sonoma State also hit eight 3-pointers. Cal State L.A. had a 32-31 rebounding edge and also forced 21 turnovers while committing 16.

Cal State L.A. took a quick 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Gibbons, but Sonoma State scored the next 10 points to take a 10-3 lead. The Seawolves still held a 12-5 lead before the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to grab the lead. Bree Parsons started the run with a basket, Melville followed with a layup and Williams hit two straight baskets to give the Golden Eagles a 13-12 lead. A 3-pointer by Gibbons broke a 15-15 tie and a 3-pointer by Melville started an 8-0 run to close the first half. Melville and Alisha Belt hit free throws and Lewis hit a 3-pointer to stake the Golden Eagles to a 26-17 lead.

The Golden Eagles still held a 38-30 lead after a 3-pointer by Melville, but Sonoma State scored the next 11 points to take a 41-38 advantage with 10:54 to play. Najera, though, took over with back-top-back offensive rebounds and baskets to put Cal State L.A. ahead for good. A 3-pointer by Lewis gave the Golden Eagles a 47-42 lead and a free throw by Gibbons and 3-pointer by Melville gave the Golden Eagles a 55-48 edge with 2:25 to play.

After Sonoma State closed to within four points, Lewis hit another 3-pointer to boost the lead to 58-51 with 1:21 to go. Two free throws by Lewis made it 60-51 with 25 seconds remaining and Williams hit four straight free throws to account for the final margin.

Gibbons finished with nine points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at San Francisco State.
