LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team fell short against one of the top NCAA Division II teams in the country in its regular-season finale Saturday.
The Golden Eagles picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, but that was it in an 8-1 loss to No. 6 Abilene Christian at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (13-5) had a five-match winning streak snapped.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 17
th in the country, are currently rated fourth in the West Region in the official NCAA rankings. The top three in the West will advance to the playoffs. The Golden Eagles have a 9-1 record in region matches and still have a shot at moving into the top three.
Cal State L.A.'s top doubles team of
Christie Lau and
Larn McShane posted another big victory, beating Abilene Christian's Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf, 8-1. Lau and McShane have won 14 consecutive matches at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match was competitive before Abilene Christian's Julia Mongin and Laura Mongin pulled away late for an 8-3 win over Cal State L.A.'s
Leora Hemmerich and

Maria Xavier fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, to Brittany Reed and Madelyn Walker.
Lau, ranked 22
nd in the nation, lost to Julia Mongin, ranked No. 2 in the country, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Sangria had the closest result for the Golden Eagles, falling at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 7-6, to Laura Mongin.
Cal State L.A. will have players compete in the Ojai Invitational beginning on April 26.
