LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team had its chances, but came up short in a hard-fought match against one of the top NAIA programs in the country.
 
The Golden Eagles fell in four singles matches, all in three-set battles, and lost to No. 2 Fresno Pacific, 6-3, Tuesday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-4) had a four-match winning streak snapped, while Fresno Pacific improved to 9-0.
 
Christie Lau and Larn McShane won easily at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, over Erika Januskova and Katarina Paliivets, but that was the Golden Eagles' only point in doubles.
 
The Golden Eagles, though, gave themselves a shot at victory by winning the first set in five of the six singles contests. Jill Sangria was the only singles player to win in straight sets when she beat Anna Mikhaylova at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2. The other five matches took three sets to decide. Tiffany Leung was the only other winner for the Golden Eagles in singles, taking a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles.
 
Lau dropped a close match at No. 1 singles to Paliivets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, while McShane led early before falling at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, to Januskova. Leora Hemmerich also led early before falling at No. 3 singles to Yumiko Justin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Maria Xavier took the first set at No. 6 singles before falling, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to Erin Carlson.
 
Cal State L.A. will not return to action until March 29 with a match at Academy of Art.
