No. 17 Golden Eagles Return To Courts With Road Victory

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team got its Northern California trip off to a successful start Thursday against an NCAA Division II West Region opponent.
 
The Golden Eagles swept the doubles and then took four of six singles contests to beat Academy of Art, 7-2, Thursday at the San Francisco Tennis Club. Cal State L.A. (9-4), which is ranked 17th in the nation and fourth in the West Region, picked up an important win over the Urban Knights (8-7), who are ranked seventh in the West Region. The Golden Eagles were playing their first match since a March 6 home contest against Fresno Pacific.
 
Christie Lau and Larn McShane got the Golden Eagles off to a strong start with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Kunkanda Phukchampa and Amal Ben El Hadj. Leora Hemmerich and Jill Sangria won at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, over Diane Phan and Daniela Amelunge, while Tiffany Leung and Maria Xavier pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles over Jenny Johansoon and Paola Correa Fe.
 
Lau beat Phukchampa at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, Hemmerich won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3, over Amelunge, Sangria won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4, over Phan and Xavier won at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
 
All six singles contests were decided in straight sets.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match at Sonoma State scheduled for a noon start.
