LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team found the going tough against one of the top NCAA Division III squads in the country Saturday.
The Golden Eagles managed one singles win and one doubles point in a 7-2 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (4-3) dropped four of the six singles matches in straight sets.
There were a pair of outstanding singles matches and each team took one of them. NCAA Division III individual champion Kristin Lim of CMS rallied to outlast Cal State L.A.'s
Christie Lau, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Cal State L.A.'s
Leora Hemmerich won in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles against Jessie Huang, 6-3, 5-7, 11-9.
Larn McShane fell in a tough match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-5, to Crystal Lim, while
Jillian Sangria fell in a tight match at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 6-3, to Claremont's Sarah Kukimo.
The Golden Eagles' No. 1 doubles team of Lau and McShane took an 8-1 decision over Claremont's Lim and Huang.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, with a match at NAIA power Vanguard.
