GLENDALE, AZ -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team battled, but was unable to notch a point against one of the NCAA Division II's top programs.
The Golden Eagles dropped all three doubles contests and never did recover in a 9-0 loss to No. 2 BYU-Hawaii, 9-0. Cal State L.A. (2-2) lost all six singles contests in straight sets. BYU-Hawaii (4-0) utilized a lineup that featured three of the top seven players in the nation in their top three spots. Cal State L.A., which beat Dixie State, 9-0, on Friday, is now 1-1 in its first two matches on the Arizona trip.
Christie Lau dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to No. 1 Annie Hwang at No. 1 singles, while
Larn McShane fell to Sherry Liu, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
Leora Hemmerich fell at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3, to Yuan Lia.
Jill Sangria lost to Marika Kobayashi, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles,
Tiffany Leung lost to Marietta Tuinetoa, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles and
Maria Xavier fell at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to Sasha Ulbrichtova.
Lau and McShane fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-1; Hemmerich and Sangria fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-1 and Leung and
Joyce Librando fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
Cal State L.A. will play two matches on Sunday -- against NCAA Division II opponents Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo -- to complete its four-match, three-day trip to Arizona.
