Golden Eagles Get Arizona Trip Off To A Promising Start

GLENDALE, AZ  – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team got its trip to Arizona off to a promising start.
 
The Golden Eagles took all three doubles contests and then swept all six singles matches in straight sets to beat Dixie State College, 9-0, Friday in Glendale, AZ. Cal State L.A. (2-1) was playing its first match of the season against an NCAA Division II opponent.
 
Christie Lau won her match at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, over Dixie State's Krista Anderson. Larn McShane won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4, over Allison Evans; Leora Hemmerich defeated Allison Long, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 singles; Jill Sangria beat Sarah Hughes, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles; Tiffany Leung beat Kristen Nichols, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Maria Xavier defeated Lindsay Snow at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Lau and McShane won handily at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, over Hughes and Anderson. Hemmerich and Sangria prevailed at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, over Long and Evans. The match of the day came at No. 3 doubles, where Joyce Librando and Leung pulled out a 9-8 win over Nichols and Smith. Cal State L.A. won, 7-5, in the tiebreaker.
 
Cal State L.A. will continue its trip with a match on Saturday against regional and national power BYU-Hawaii before ending with two matches on Sunday against Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo.
