Box Score OAKLAND -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got itself going in time for a victory in its final non-conference game of the regular season.
The Golden Eagles got three clutch 3-pointers from
Joshua Munzon to break a 32-32 tie and went on to a 65-49 victory over Holy Names Saturday in Tobin Gym. Cal State L.A. (5-3) won its third consecutive game with another solid second-half performance.
Cal State L.A. held a 27-20 halftime lead and outscored Holy Names, 38-29, in the second half. Munzon's 3-pointers fueled a 9-2 run in the second period that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 18 points with 4:44 remaining and led comfortably the rest of the way.
James Tillman had a game-high 23 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Munzon finished with 14 points and four steals,
Willie Trimble had 11 points and five assists and
Julian Camper had 10 points and five rebounds.
Tyler Fry had 22 points to lead Holy Names (3-6). Fry knocked down seven 3-pointers and was the only player on his team to reach double figures.
Cal State L.A. shot 48 percent for the game (24-of-50), including 56 percent (14-of-25) in the second half. Holy Names shot just 34 percent (17-of-50).
The Golden Eagles had a 40-25 rebounding edge and both teams had 15 turnovers.
Jordan Richard had another strong game for the Golden Eagles with six points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and trailed, 10-5, after a 3-pointer by Fry with 13 minutes to go in the opening half. A Munzon 3-pointer tied it at 15-15 and a steal and basket by Munzon gave Cal State L.A. a 17-15 edge. Tillman then scored four straight points to bump the lead to 23-15 and the Golden Eagles settled for a 27-20 halftime lead.
Holy Names battled back and tied the game at 32-32 with 15 minutes to play before Munzon hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Munzon's third 3-pointer made it 41-34. Holy Names was still within striking range at 48-41 before Cal State L.A. scored 11 straight points to put the game out of reach. An offensive rebound and basket by Richard started the run and a free throw by Camper made it 51-41. Camper then scored a basket that was followed by six consecutive points by Trimble that gave the Golden Eagles a 59-41 lead with 4:44 to go.
Cal State L.A. will now play 18 consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association games beginning with a home contest against Cal State East Bay on Friday, Jan. 4.
