The Golden Eagles held a one-point halftime lead, but didn't play their best in the second half and fell to host Alaska Anchorage, 66-56, in the Wells Fargo Center. Cal State L.A. (7-4) went 2-1 after posting wins over Eastern New Mexico and BYU-Hawaii in the tournament.

The game was a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II West Region first-round playoff game in La Jolla, also won by Alaska Anchorage at UC San Diego.

Cal State L.A. shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56), while Alaska Anchorage shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66). The Golden Eagles were 5-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc, while Alaska Anchorage was 6-for-28. Cal State L.A. was 7-of-12 from the free-throw line, while Alaska Anchorage was 10-of-13.

Cal State L.A. started the game well, scoring the first five points on a three-point play by Williams and a layup by Lewis. The Golden Eagles opened up a 10-6 lead after a 3-pointer by Lewis and grabbed a 20-16 advantage after a layup by Parsons with 8:12 to go in the half. Alaska Anchorage fought back to take a lead later in the half before a layup by Parsons and a free throw by Williams gave the Golden Eagles a 30-29 halftime edge.

Alaska Anchorage opened the second half with a 3-pointer and never trailed again. A layup by Williams tied it at 32-32, but Alaska Anchorage scored the next seven points and never trailed again. A basket by Lewis brought the Golden Eagles back to within 45-41 and a 3-pointer by Lewis trimmed a 10-point deficit to 51-44 with six minutes to go. Another 3-pointer by Melville cut a 12-point deficit to 56-47 with 4:32 remaining and a 3-pointer by Lewis made it 58-50 with 3:38 to go. Gibbons hit a 3-pointer to make it 61-53 with 2:06 left, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
