Box Score SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got its offense rolling just in time to salvage an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State San Bernardino.
It took a half for the Golden Eagles to shake off their first loss of the season on Friday, but Cal State L.A. scored 50 points in the second half and outlasted the Coyotes, 87-82, Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State L.A. (5-1, 2-1 CCAA), which lost to UC San Diego on Friday, was able to earn a split of its weekend road games.
Tessondra Williams had another big evening for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a season-high 24 points and adding eight assists.
Lacey Gibbons had 16 points,
Bree Parsons scored 14 points and
Samantha Hansen had 10 points and six rebounds.
Cal State San Bernardino (2-3, 1-1 CCAA) had four players reach double figures, including Trinidee Trice, who had a game-high 26 points. Kristen Huffman had 15 points, Taylor Gipson had 14 points and Jaslyn Cosey had 12 points.
Cal State L.A. shot 55.9 percent for the game (33-of-59) and was a sizzling 62.5 percent in the second half (20-of-32). The Golden Eagles were an efficent 50 percent from 3-point range (6-of-12) and made 15-of-17 free throws.
Cal State San Bernardino shot well also, making 54.5 percent of its shots (36-of-66). The Coyotes made 21-of-33 attempts in the first half (63.6 percent) before cooling off a bit in the second half (15-of-33, 45.5 percent).
The Golden Eagles had a 29-28 rebounding edge and both teams committed 15 turnovers.
Kelli Lewis hit a game-opening 3-pointer to get the Golden Eagles on the board, but Cal State L.A. found itself in a first-half hole for the fifth time in six games. The Coyotes led by as many as nine points, 31-22, before the Golden Eagles steadily got back into the contest. A layup by Williams, a 3-pointer by
Chiara DiMarco and a basket by Hansen cut the deficit to 31-29 before the Coyotes bumped the lead back to eight at 42-34 late in the half. A 3-pointer by Parsons made it 42-37 and the Coyotes scored the final basket of the half to take a 44-37 halftime lead.
The Coyotes led by as many as seven points in the second half, the final time at 59-52. Gibbons hit back-to-back baskets and DiMarco hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 59-59. A 3-pointer by Gibbons gave the Golden Eagles a short-lived 62-59 lead, but the Coyotes answered Cal State L.A. basket for basket until an offensive rebound and basket by
Kaija Powell put the Golden Eagles ahead for good, 68-66, with seven minutes left..
Parsons then scored six staight points -- including two consecutive baskets on assists from Williams -- to boost the lead to 74-66 with 4:32 remaining. Parsons' final basket came on a fastbreak after a rebound and outlet pass from
Paige Melville.
Cal State L.A. maintained a comfortable edge the remainder of the game.
Melville finished the game with eight points and three assists, while DiMarco hit both her shot attempts - 3-pointers -- and had six points.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home conference game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m.
