Golden Eagles Ride The Elevator Up In San Francisco

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team has been on one big rollercoaster ride during the 2012 season with exhilirataing highs and excruciating lows.

Friday was one of the low points, a lopsided three-set loss at Sonoma State. On Saturday, though, the Golden Eagles bounced back in a big way and recorded a 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 victory over regionally-ranked San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association match in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (11-13, 9-8 CCAA) hit at a resounding .311 percentage in the match and enjoyed an unheard of 11.5 - 0 advantage in blocks.

Cal State L.A. snapped a two-match losing streak and completed the road portion of their conference schedule with a 7-4 record. The Golden Eagles will conclude the regular season with five home matches.

Samantha Potter led a balanced offensive attack with 11 kills, while Sukhjit Athwal had nine kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Marquis Mora had six kills, eight blocks and four service aces and Loreal Carter had six kills and eight blocks.

Meagan Wright had 14 kills to lead San Francisco State (18-7, 13-5 CCAA), while Kelly Ostello had 10 kills.

Alexandra Bura had 34 set assists and eight digs. April Reyes added 12 digs.

The Golden Eagles trailed in kills, 41-40, but more than made up for it with their dominance at the net and also a 7-3 edge in service aces. The sweep avenged a four-set loss to San Francisco State earlier this season in the Eagles Nest. It was also Cal State L.A.'s second big road sweep against a top team in the region. Earlier, the Golden Eagles swept conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles established themselves early and San Francisco State never could come stop them. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 18-12 lead in the opening set following an ace by Mora. San Francisco State fought back and forged a 23-23 tie, only to see Cal State L.A. capture  the set after a kill by Kymberly Silveyra and a block by Carter and Reanna Hill.

The Golden Eagles broke free of a 13-13 tie in the second set and eventually built a 21-15 lead following a block by Hill and Carter. After the Gators closed to within 21-17, Potter took over and provided four consecutive kills to finish the set.

San Francisco State opened up a 9-2 lead in the third set, but Cal State L.A. roared back to complete the sweep. A block by Mora and Athwal tied it up at 19-19 and, after San Francisco State regained the lead at 20-19, the Golden Eagles scored the next three points on Gator errors to take a 22-20 lead. San Francisco State closed to within 22-21, but a kill by Mora, a kill by Hill and an ace by Mora ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
