Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team continued its late-season rush with a thrilling five-set win over Chico State on Friday that included a record-setting night for All-American
Marquis Mora.
The Golden Eagles staved off a match point in the fifth set and outlasted Chico State, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 17-15 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-13, 13-8 CCAA) took over sole possession of fifth place in the conference with the victory.
Mora, who was the star of the match once again, had 19 kills and 13 blocks to lead the Golden Eagles. Her 12 block assists (one was a solo block) give her 145 block assists on the season and breaks the CCAA mark of 142 set by Cal Poly Pomona's Antoinette Kathol in 2006.
Mora also had three service aces, including the one on match point that sealed the victory for the Golden Eagles.
Mora, who hit at a .531 percentage, had a match-high 29 points for Cal State L.A.
Alex Shurtz had a match-high 26 kills for Chico State (18-10, 12-9 CCAA), while Ellie Larronde had 12 kills, Lindsay Quigley had 11 kills and Sable Villaescusa had 56 set assists and 13 digs.
Cal State L.A. also got 11 kills and nine blocks from
Loreal Carter and 10 kills from
Samantha Potter.
Sukhjit Athwal had nine kills and a team-high 20 digs, while
Alexandra Bura had 40 set assists.
Chico State had a 69-60 edge in kills, but the Golden Eagles outhit the Wildcats, .241 - .155. The Golden Eagles dominated at the net, holding a big 17-6 edge in blocks. Both teams had five service aces.
The Golden Eagles showed some resolve in the match. After trailing 2-1 in sets and 22-21 in the fourth set, Cal State L.A. rebounded nicely. A kill by
Reanna Hill tied it at 22-22 and Carter then served out the set. An ace made it 23-22, an attack error made it 24-22 and a kill by Athwal gave the Golden Eagles the set, 25-22.
The match had some extreme drama in the fifth set. Chico State jumped out to a 9-4 lead and then took a 13-8 advantage following a kill by Shurtz.
Mora, though, took over from there. She had back-to-back kills to make it 13-10 and then combined with Carter for three consecutive blocks to tie the match at 13-13. After a kill by Shurtz got the Wildcats to match point at 14-13, another Mora kill evened it at 14-14. Mora and Shurtz traded kills to make it 15-15 and the Golden Eagles got to their second match point at 16-15. This time, Mora ended the contest with an ace, sending the Golden Eagles into a joyous celebration.
Cal State L.A. will complete its regular season on Saturday night with a home match against Cal State Stanislaus. The Golden Eagles will honor their five seniors,
