Box Score CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team had an outing that was only half good Thursday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 29-18 halftime lead, only to get outscored by 18 points in the second half of a 62-55 loss to the Toros in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (1-1, 0-1 CCAA) was just 8-of-26 from the floor in the second half, while the Toros (2-2, 1-0 CCAA) rebounded from a cold first half to make 15-of-33 of its attempts in the second half.
James Tillman had a big game for the Golden Eagles with 21 points and nine rebounds, while
Jordan Richard had 16 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.
DeShaun Freeman had 20 points for Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Givon Crump had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Crump hit all four of his 3-pointers in the second half to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills charge.
Solomon Singer and
Marc Wilson had six points each.
Cal State L.A. shot 36.2 percent for the game (21-of-58), while Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56). The Golden Eagles made only one of their 13 attempts from behind the 3-point arc, while the Toros were 5-of-14. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 15-of-20. Both teams had 39 rebounds. The Golden Eagles had 21 turnovers to 17 for the Toros.
The Golden Eagles played well in the first half and opened up a 17-9 lead after a steal and layup by
Joshua Munzon. A Munzon jumper gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead of the game at 26-16 and a 3-pointer by Singer with three seconds left in the half gave Cal State L.A. a 29-18 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles were unable to build any momentum following Singer's 3-pointer to close the half and the Toros scored the first eight points of the second half. Cal State Dominguez Hills eventually took the lead at 32-31. The Golden Eagles regained the lead after a basket by Richard, but the Toros scored eight straight points again to take a 40-33 lead.
Cal State L.A. responded with a 7-0 run that featured a basket by Singer, a free throw by Singer and two straight baskets by Richard that tied the game at 40-40 and a basket by Richard tied the game for a final time at 42-42. Crump, though, hit a go-ahead 3-pointer for the Toros with eight minutes to go and the Toros led the rest of the way. A 13-4 run by Cal State Dominguez Hills gave the Toros their biggest lead, 55-46, with 4:42 to go and Cal State L.A. was unable to pull closer than four points the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action in a non-conference game at Cal Baptist on Saturday, Nov. 24.
