Golden Eagles Fall For A Third Time In Double Overtime

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team endured yet another heartbreaking ending to another California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Golden Eagles lost for the third time this season in double overtime on Sunday, this time falling to No. 5 Sonoma State, 1-0, in the 103rd minute. It was a damaging loss for the Golden Eagles (7-5-4, 5-5-3 CCAA), who fall five points behind second-place Cal Poly Pomona in the South Division with two matches remaining for the last remaining spot in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament.

Sonoma State (13-2-1, 10-2-1 CCAA) was able to salvage a weekend split after losing at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday. The Seawolves entered the week as the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II West Region. Cal State L.A. was ranked seventh; six teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Golden Eagles played another solid game on Sunday, but was unable to get a shot past Sonoma State goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua. Sonoma State enjoyed a 16-13 advantage in shots, although the majority of shots from both teams were from a distance. Quality chances were few and far between in a match between two of the better defensive teams in the conference. Sciacqua made five saves for Sonoma State, while Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Gabriella Batmani made seven saves.

The Golden Eagles got caught early in the second overtime after a collision deep in the Cal State L.A. end of the field. Play continued and Bree Robles sent a cross into the box and JJ McFarlin headed it perfectly just inside the far post and out of the reach of Batmani for the game-winner.

Cal State L.A. had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The best scoring chances during regulation were not actually prevented by the goalkeepers. Sonoma State's Ashley Martin got a header off a free kick just go over the crossbar early in the second half and Cal State L.A.'s Andrea Lammers had a header off a cross sail just wide of the post a few minutes later.

Tahne Apo had five shots for the Golden Eagles, while Lammers, Janelle Hanna and Allyson Sherwood had two each. Martin and Elena Catania had three shots each for the Seawolves.

The Golden Eagles honored their three seniors -- Gabriella Batmani, Raquel Gervas and Maddi Meighan -- in pregame ceremonies.

Cal State L.A. will now need wins in its last two regular-season games to qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
