TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team made sure it kept the big leads it enjoyed against Cal State Stanislaus Friday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Golden Eagles built leads as large as 19 points in the first half and 20 points in the second half and beat the Warriors, 73-65, in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (10-3, 6-3 CCAA) remained in a third-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA, one game behind conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino.
Chris Robinson poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Leland Jones had 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Ryan Wetherell had 12 points.
Reggie Jones had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Cal State Stanislaus (8-5, 4-5 CCAA). Brett Sayad added 12 points, all of them coming on four 3-pointers.
Cal State L.A. shot 50 percent for the game (27-of-54) and also shot 50 percent from the free-throw line (15-of-30). The Golden Eagles limited Cal State Stanislaus to just 37 percent shooting (20-of-54), including just 22.2 percent in the first half (6-of-27).
Cal State Stanislaus had a slim 38-36 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to just 11 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. rebounded nicely from its disappointing loss last Saturday against Sonoma State when the Golden Eagles were unable to hold onto a late 16-point lead and fell in overtime. Cal State L.A. took control of Friday's game with a 19-2 run that busted open a 10-10 tie. The Golden Eagles eventually opened up a 34-15 lead before settling for a 36-26 halftime advantage.
The Golden Eagles opened up the second half with a 10-0 run to take a 20-point lead and kept the Warriors at a safe distance the rest of the way. Cal State Stanislaus was able to trim the deficit to six points late in the game, but the Golden Eagles made enough free throws and avoided the turnovers that cost them dearly last week.
Cal State L.A. grabbed the lead for good in the first half when a basket by Wetherell and six straight points by Robinson gave the Golden Eagles an 18-10 lead. A 3-pointer by Wetherell gave the Golden Eagles a 27-12 lead and a 3-pointer by
Bussey Ellis gave Cal State L.A. a 32-14 advantage with five minutes remaining in the half. A basket by Jones gave the Golden Eagles their biggest first-half lead at 34-15.
After the Warriors sliced the lead down to 10 points at halftime, the Golden Eagles held Cal State Stanislaus scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half to restore order. Four points by Robinson, two from Wetherell and four straight from
Quinton Watkins pushed the lead to 46-26 with 16:47 to go. A 3-pointer by Wetherell gave the Golden Eagles another 20-point edge at 49-29 with 15:46 remaining.
After the Warriors made a push to close the gap to eight points,
Carl Hoffman scored a basket to push the lead back to 10 points, 64-54, with less than six minutes to go. Jones followed with a score to make it 66-54 with less than five minutes left.
Cal State Stanislaus scored the next five points, but Jones and Robinson each hit a free throw to extend the lead to 68-59 with 1:10 left. After a 3-pointer by Joe Malone made it 68-62 with 1:02 remaining, Robinson hit two free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 70-62 edge. Ellis made a free throw to make it 71-63 and two free throws by Wetherell gave the Golden Eagles a 73-63 advantage in the waning seconds.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State.
