Golden Eagles Unable To Sustain Momentum In Loss

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had things going its way early, but once the Golden Eagles lost their momentum, they were never able to get it back.
 
Cal State L.A. won the opening set and had a large early lead in the second set, but Cal Poly Pomona stormed back and posted a 22-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-22 victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-7, 3-5 CCAA) slipped back under the .500 mark for the season.
 
Marquis Mora had 12 kills and seven blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Reanna Hill had 11 kills and six blocks.
 
Diana Lake had 14 kills and 16 digs to lead Cal Poly Pomona (6-6, 3-5 CCAA). Karissa Lagmay had 11 kills and eight digs for the Broncos.
 
Cal Poly Pomona had a 61-55 edge in kills, while Cal State L.A. hit at a .250 percentage to .232 for Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State L.A. had a 14-6 edge in blocks, but the Golden Eagles also had five blocking errors and four ball-handling miscues. Cal Poly Pomona had an 8-3 edge in service aces.
 
The Golden Eagles looked to have things in hand early, winning the first set, 25-22 and opening leads of 12-2 and 18-12 in the second. Cal Poly Pomona, though, stormed back to even the match by winning the second and also used a late rally to win the third. The Broncos then finished the match by leading from start to finish in the final set.
 
Chelsea Hamilton and Mary Laupepa had six kills each, while Kymberly Silveyra had five kills and a hitting percentage of .833. Briana Fields and Natalia Gonzalez also had five kills each. Kaylynne Taeatafa had 35 set assists and 11 digs. Alexandra Risko had a team-high 15 digs.
 
The Golden Eagles got the match off to a good start. Cal State L.A. broke a 17-17 tie after a pair of kills by Mora and a service ace by April Reyes made it 20-17. The Golden Eagles led the rest of the frame, getting to set point after a block by Hill and Laupepa and ending it on a service error.
 
Cal State L.A. then jumped out to a big lead in the second set, only to see Cal Poly Pomona chip away at the deficit. The Golden Eagles still had a 23-21 lead, but kills by Taylr Kreutziger, Lagmay and Jessica Doerner put the Broncos ahead, 24-23. A kill by Laupepa evened the set up at 24-24, but a service error and an ace by Kreutziger gave the set to the Broncos.
 
Cal State L.A. had a late lead in the third set as well. The Golden Eagles were ahead, 24-22, after a kill by Hill, but a kill by Doerner and three straight kills by Kristin McNeese gave the Broncos a second straight 26-24 win.
 
Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. Cal State L.A. pulled to within three points of the lead several times, the final time at 24-21 after a kill by Silveyra. A kill by Lauren Jones ended the match.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action with another home game on Saturday night, this one against San Francisco State.
