LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team continued to show its late-season improvement, but the Golden Eagles suffered a second straight heartbreaker to UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles, coming off their win earlier this week over the nation's No. 5 NAIA team, pushed UC San Diego to the limit on Saturday before falling, 5-4, in La Jolla. Cal State L.A. (7-13) lost for the second time this season to the Tritons, both times by a final count of 5-4. The Golden Eagles had beaten Azusa Pacific in their match on Monday.

Cal State L.A., which dropped two of the three doubles contests in the first meeting between the two schools, prevailed in two of the three this time. Christie Lau and Larn McShane won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, over Taskeen Bains and Haley Perrotte and Jillian Sangria and Joyce Librando won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, over Katie Mulloy and Roxanna Pourmirzaie.

The Golden Eagles, though, managed only two wins in singles and fell one point short of the victory. Lau came back in impressive fashion after dropping the second set of a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 win over Bains at No. 1 singles and McShane rallied strongly in a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Cindy Dao at No. 2 singles.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its season next Wednesday with a home match against Sonoma State beginning at 2 p.m.
