HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team used a couple of explosive runs to make sure it salvaged a weekend split in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Golden Eagles got back into the game thanks to a 10-0 run in the first half and broke the game open with a 19-0 run in the second half and beat Cal State East Bay, 71-59, in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (5-4, 3-2 CCAA) outscored Cal State East Bay, 40-25, in the second period.
Tessondra Williams led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds, while
Jazzi Johnson had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Lacy Ramon added 13 points and five assists.
Micha Walker had 14 points and four rebounds to lead Cal State East Bay (4-6, 1-3 CCAA). Cassie Coble had 12 points and five rebounds and Marlene MacMillian had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Cal State L.A. had an outstanding shooting performance. The Golden Eagles hit 10 of their 20 attempts from 3-point range and shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) overall. Cal State L.A. was 13-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 37 percent (20-of-54) overall and was just 5-of-19 from behind the arc. The Pioneers were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line.
Cal State L.A. was especially effective in the second half, knocking down 13-of-20 field-goal attempts, including six of 10 fro, behind the arc.
Cal State East Bay had a 40-30 rebounding advantage. Cal State L.A. forced 24 turnvovers and committed 18.
Williams had four 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles, while
Amanda Deal and
Lacey Gibbons had two 3-pointers each. Ramon and
Erika Ruiz also hit 3-pointers for Cal State L.A.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and fell behind by as many as 13 points, 39-26, in the first half. Cal State L.A. still trailed by 11 points, 32-21, before a 10-0 run late in the period got the Golden Eagles back into the game. A three-point play by Johnson started the run and a steal and layup by Johnson made it 32-26. A free throw by
Alisha Belt and two more baskets by Johnson cut the deficit to 32-31.
Cal State East Bay scored the last basket of the half to make it 34-31 and then opened the second half with a basket to take a 36-31 advantage.
Cal State L.A. responded with a 19-0 run to take control of the contest. Consecutive 3-pointers by Gibbons and Williams gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good, 37-36. Two free throws by Ramon and another 3-pointer by Wiliams quickly pushed the lead to 42-36. Two baskets by Ramon and a 3-pointer by Wiliams made it 49-36 and a Williams free throw gave the Golden Eagles a 50-36 edge with 12:05 remaining.
The Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins the rest of the way and grabbed their biggest lead of the game, 70-51, after a layup by Ramon with 4:18 remaining.
Gibbons and Deal finished with six points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday, Dec. 30, with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
