LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put an exclamation point on its best week of the 2011 season.

The Golden Eagles won their third consecutive match, beating Humboldt State, 25-17, 25-21, 27-25, Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (12-11, 9-9 CCAA) completed a season sweep of the Lumberjacks (8-14, 5-13 CCAA) with the win.

The Golden Eagles, carrying the momentum from a four-set win over Sonoma State on Friday, started quickly on Saturday. Cal State L.A. opened up a 16-10 lead following a kill from Mora and extended the edge to 23-14 after kill by Mary Laupepa, Gonzalez and Hamilton. The Golden Eagles reached set point after an attack error and closed out the set on a kill by Hamilton.

The final two sets were real battles. A kill by Neale pulled the Jacks even at 19-19, but a kill by Gonzalez and a ball-handling error by Humboldt State gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Matsubu closed the gap to 21-20, but a kill by Hamilton and a block by Hamilton and Mora made it 23-20. A kill by Rosendale made it 23-21, but a kill by Silveyra and an attack error by the Jacks ended the set.

Cal State L.A. took leads of 10-4, 14-8 and 18-12 in the third set, but Humboldt State rallied strongly and had a chance to extend the match. The Jacks pulled even after a kill by Rosendale and back-to-back attack errors by the Golden Eagles and got to set point at 24-23 after a block by Neale and Allison Drobish. A kill by Laupepa, though, saved the set point for the Golden Eagles and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles their first match point at 25-24. A kill by Matsubu made it 25-25, but a service error and an attack error ended the match.

The Golden Eagles honored their five seniors – Alexandra Risko, Mary Laupepa, Chelsea Hamilton, Natalia Gonzalez and Briana Fields – in pre-match ceremonies.

Cal State L.A. will play its final four matches on the road, beginning with a match at Cal Poly Pomona next Wednesday.
