LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had been waiting for that match when it put everything together and Friday night the Golden Eagles finally got it.
The Golden Eagles overcame a slow start and roared back to beat Sonoma State, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-11, 8-9 CCAA) won its second straight match while handing the Seawolves (18-4, 15-2) only their second conference loss of the season.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .350 clip in the match, including a sizzling .556 in the fourth set when the Golden Eagles closed out the contest. Sonoma State hit at a .269 percentage for the match.
Cal State L.A. had a 59-56 edge in kills, a 9-8.5 advantage in blocks and a 6-3 edge in service aces. Most importantly, the Golden Eagles played steady throughout the match and avoided the lapses that have hurt the team several times this season.
Natalia Gonzalez had 14 kills to lead a balanced Cal State L.A. attack.
Kymberly Silveyra had 13 kills,
Marquis Mora had 12 kills, four blocks and hit at a .588 percentage and
Chelsea Hamilton had 10 kills and four blocks.
Keala Peterson and Kelsey Hull had 17 kills each to lead Sonoma State, while Allyson Sather added 15 kills.
Kaylynne Taeatafa had a strong match for the Golden Eagles, providing 49 set assists and 10 digs, while
Mary Laupepa added seven kills, four service aces and three blocks while hitting at a .429 percentage.
April Reyes had a team-high 14 digs.
After dropping the first set, Cal State L.A. responded in a big way in the second set. With the score tied at 16-16, the Golden Eagles scored the next seven points. A service error started the run, which continued with a kill by Hamilton, an attack error, a block by Hamilton and Mora, a kill by Hamilton and back-to-back aces by Laupepa. The Golden Eagles eventually took the set on a kill by Mora.
The Golden Eagles didn't skip a beat in the third set, racing out to a 15-10 lead and never looking back. The Golden Eagles got a kill from Laupepa and a block by Hamilton and Mora to open up a 23-16 advantage and got a kill from Mora and a Sonoma State attack error to end the set.
The fourth set was a battle. The Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills from Gonzalez and Silveyra to break a 15-15 tie and two kills by Hamilton and a block by Hamilton and Mora allowed the Golden Eagles to take a 20-16 lead. Sonoma State fought back and closed to within 23-22 after a kill by Peterson, but a kill by Laupepa and an attack error ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with its final home match of the season. The Golden Eagles will honor their five seniors –
