CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had a week to forget last week, but the Golden Eagles got this week off to a promising start with a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and went on to a 25-13, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday night in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (10-11, 7-9 CCAA) snapped a two-match losing streak -- both losses were in three-set sweeps last week.
Cal State L.A. had a 48-40 edge in kills and an 8-3 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles had 11 service aces, while the Toros (1-19, 0-15 CCAA) had four. Cal State L.A. hit at a .314 percentage while limiting the Toros to .198.
Chelsea Hamilton and
Natalia Gonzalez had eight kills each to lead a balanced attack.
Marquis Mora,
Mary Laupepa and
Briana Fields had seven kills each.
Abbey Prusa had 12 kills to lead the Toros, while Delea Pursel had 10 kills.
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 45 set assists, seven digs and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Alexandra Risko had 10 digs. Fields and Laupepa had three service aces each, while Mora had a team-high seven blocks.
The Golden Eagles started strongly and opened up a quick 16-8 lead after a block by Mora and Taeatafa. After holding a 20-13 lead, the Golden Eagles scored the last five points of the set on a kill by Laupepa, a block by Mora and Hamilton, an attack error and two aces by Laupepa.
Cal State L.A. fell behind, 14-10, in the second set, but went on a lengthy run to turn things around. The Golden Eagles tied the set at 16-16 after a kill by Hamilton and then took the lead for good with six straight points on kills by Mora, Hamilton and Fields, an attack error, a bad set and a kill by Fields. An ace by Hamilton and a kill by Fields eventually closed out the set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind again in the third set, but this time they couldn't recover.
Cal State L.A. fell behind in the fourth set as well, 5-3, but went on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good. A kill by Hamilton, a block by Hamilton and Mora and an ace by Laupepa opened up a 12-7 lead. Three straight aces by Fields gave the Golden Eagles a 19-13 lead and a bad set and a kill by Mora made it 21-13. A kill by Gonzalez gave the Golden Eagles a 23-17 lead and two Toro errors ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match against Humboldt State on Friday.
