LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team survived a wild and unexpected shootout with San Francisco State Friday night in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The Golden Eagles lost a 2-0 halftime lead, but then quickly got a game-winning goal from
Cari Gill to beat the Gators, 3-2, in Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (10-3-2, 8-3-2) remains in second place in the CCAA South Division with the victory.
The game pitted the last two CCAA champions and the two finalists in the 2010 CCAA Championship Tournament. San Francisco State (8-6-1, 6-6-1), which won the 2010 CCAA title on penalty kicks against Cal State L.A., battled back strongly Friday from a 2-0 halftime deficit thanks to a pair of second-half goals from Kiley Williams.
The Golden Eagles, though, responded with what turned out to be the game-winner less than a minute after San Francisco State had tied the game.
Lisa Ohberg took a hard shot that was saved by Annica Jones, but Gill got to the rebound first and knocked it into the goal. The goal was the second of the game for Gill and third of the season.
Ohberg had the other goal for the Golden Eagles.
Jones had five saves in goal for the Gators, including a couple of sensational stops to keep her team in the contest.
Jessie Walworth made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. had a 10-9 advantage in shots. Both teams had five shots in what turned out to be a wide-open second half.
Ohberg scored her sixth goal of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute. Ohberg took a cross from
Justine Telles and rifled a shot off the crossbar. Telles then got to the ball and sent in another cross that Ohberg was able to direct into the net.
Gill then made it 2-0 in the 44
th minute.
Marissa Pickett started the play with a pass to
Maddi Meighan, who sent a cross to Gill, who volleyed it inside the far post.
The second half started calmly enough, but San Francisco State started generating some chances and Williams had a pair of outstanding goals. The first came in the 67
th minute when she took a pass from Nicole Vanni and sent a shot just under the crossbar from just inside the box.
Then, eight minutes later, she dribbled through Cal State L.A. defenders in the box until she was alone in front, just a few yards in front of Walworth. She tucked the ball into the lower left corner to tie the score.
Cal State L.A. regrouped quickly and Ohberg drilled a shot that Jones saved, but Gill knocked in the rebound. Jones made a sensational stop about four minutes later when she just got a piece of a shot by
Janet Mendez, who one-timed a pass from Meighan toward the upper corner of the goal.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona. The Golden Eagles will honor their 13 seniors in pregame ceremonies.
