Golden Eagles Fall In Five Sets To San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team seemed poised for a big road California Collegiate Athletic Association victory, only to see San Francisco State rally to take it away.

The Golden Eagles held a 2-1 lead in sets and had a 7-0 lead in the fourth set, but San Francisco State rallied for a 25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 28-26, 15-13 win in Main Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. (6-4, 3-3 CCAA) lost both ends of its conference road trip at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and San Francisco State on Sunday.

The Gators (7-5, 4-3 CCAA) won both their matches at home.

Marquis Mora had 17 kills and two service aces to lead the Golden Eagles, while Zuzana Cizova had 12 kills and four blocks.

Lauren Walsh and Robyn Hall had 13 kills each for the Gators.

Cal State L.A. had a slight edge in kills (62-56) and a large edge in blocks (11-4). The Golden Eagles hit at a .237 percentage and held San Francisco State to just .139. Cal State L.A., though had seven kills and seven attack errors in the final set, while San Francisco State had six kills and only two errors.

The Golden Eagles had eight service aces and 11 errors, while San Francisco State had seven aces and seven errors.

Natalia Gonzalez had 11 kills and three blocks, while Mary Laupepa had 10 kills and five blocks. Stefanie Gay had a team-high 21 digs, while Amrita Tuladhar had 46 set assists and 11 digs.

The Golden Eagles dropped a hard-fought first set, but came back to take the second and third sets. Cal State L.A. opened up a 23-19 lead in the second set and closed it out after a kill by Sade Greene and a block by Laupepa and Tuladhar.

Cal State L.A. opened up a quick 10-2 lead in the third set and never let up. The Golden Eagles built a 19-9 lead after a kill by Gonzalez and ultimtaely closed out the set on a kill by Greene.

The Golden Eagles then jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth set behind the serving of Tuladhar and three straight kills by Laupepa. The Golden Eagles opened up a 17-10 lead after a block by Gonzalez and Greene, but San Francisco State steadily chipped away at the deficit. The Golden Eagles held four match points at 24-20, but the Gators scored the next five points. A kill by Tuladhar and a kill by Gonzalez staved off two set points, but the Gators got kills by Hall and Walsh to extend the match.

Cal State L.A. fell behind early in the fifth set and never quite recovered. The Golden Eagles trailed, 13-9, before a kill by Gonzalez, a San Francisco State attack error and back-to-back kills by Cizova tied it at 13-13, but San Francisco State took advantage of two Cal State L.A. attack errors to end it.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday at UC San Diego.
